How to recognize a good wedding photographer?

It is not easy because you will meet him two or three times in your life, but some little details can be observed from how he present himself: in the site of Jeff Schaefer, for instance, there is a page with answers to Frequently Asked Questions: this .
It is very interesting the answer to question 1: "There is a photographer for any budget". That's true. But "I only want couples to book me if I am their perfect fit". This answer is important because Jeff tell to the couple his own professionality. Of course many couples will change idea about Jeff for this answer, because they imagine a high cost for the service, but he is right, because wedding photography is a professional activity, and it is correct that couple and photographer have to perfectly fit.

Other good questions to ask to your wedding photographer are:

2 - Are you available on my date?

6 - How much time will we need to spend taking photographs?

13 - Will you have backup equipment?

19 - Will Jeff Schaefer photograph the wedding himself?

23 - Will you book more than one wedding on the same day?

You can see by yourself how Jeff answered to questions and I can tell you this is a professional way to work, because I have met in my job hundreds of wedding photographers: not all, of course, have the same quality.

Non è facile riconoscere un buon fotografo di matrimonio perché lo incontrerai due o tre volta in vita tua, ma ci sono dei dettagli che possono essere osservati da come lui ti si presenta. Nel sito di Jeff Schaefer per esempio c'è una pagina riservata alle FAQ (le domande più frequenti): this .

E' molto interessante la risposta alla domanda numero 1: "C'è un fotografo per ogni budget". E' vero. Ma Jeff dice: "voglio solo quelle coppie che mi considerano perfetto per loro". Questa risposta è importante perché Jeff mostra in questo modo alla coppia la propria professionalità. Ovviamente molte coppie cambieranno idea su Jeff dopo questa risposta, pensando che i costi siano elevati, tuttavia Jeff ha ragione a presentarsi in questo modo, perché la fotografia di matrimonio è una attività professionale, quindi è giusto che esista un pefetto feeling tra il fotografo e la coppia di sposi.

Altre domande alle quali Jeff risponde nelle sue FAQ e che voi potreste rigirare al fotografo candidato per il vostro matrimonio sono:

2) Sei disponibile per il giorno delle mie nozze?

6) Quanto tempo serve usualmente agli sposi per fare le foto con te?

13) Hai dei backup (cioè dei doppioni) delle tue attrezzature, in caso di malfunzionamenti?

19) Verrai tu personalmente a fare le foto o manderai qualcuno?

23) Ti capita di fare fotografie a più di un matrimonio in uno stesso giorno?

Potete vedere da soli - ma è solo in inglese - come Jeff ha risposto alle domande di cui sopra, ma posso dirvi che il modo proposto è molto professionale perché nel mio lavoro ho conosciuto centinaia di fotografi di matrimonio e non tutti, ovviamente, hanno lo stesso valore. Mi posso sbagliare, ma non di molto.

Alessandro Gatto's photo albums in Aicurzio (Milan)

Today I went also to visit Alessandro Gatto, a wedding professional photographer in Aicurzio, in the surrounding of Monza GP circuit. He shows me his own photo albums, made by a friend firm. He has a catalouge of Mario Acerboni, one of G. Bandinelli (a new one, even if he already knew the firm), I also have seen there something about Erreeffe, a firm from Brescia, but he shows me a very special kind of photo albums: have you haver seen something made in sheep leather? I think it was this:

He sometimes uses these kind of photo albums for his customers because, he said, they are smooth and soft and they have a good finishing. Also for interioriors special indian papers are used here.

Gatto is not a customer of mine, but he gives me a sharp impression because he is focalized on wedding, he has a studio in this little village, not a big shop, and I think he could be taken as reference for new couples in the northern east of Milan. If you want to marry there you should contact him to see how he works and to take some ideas.

Oggi ho visitato anche Alessandro Gatto, un fotografo specialista in matrimoni di Aicurzio, dalle parti di Monza. Mi ha fatto vedere gli album fotografici che usa, fatti da un'azienda amica. Ha un catalogo di Acerboni, uno di Bandinelli (uno nuovo, sebbene già conoscesse l'azienda), ho visto anche qualcosa di Erreeffe, un'azienda di Brescia, mi ha però fatto vedere una tipologia molto particolare di album fotografici: avete mai visto qualcosa fatto in pelle di pecora? A volte usa questo tipo di albums per i suoi clienti perché, dice, sono lisci e morbidi oltre che ben finiti. Anche gli interni sono fatti di carte indiane molto particolari. Gatto non è un mio cliente, però mi ha fatto un'ottima impressione perché è focalizzato nei matrimoni, ha uno studio in questo piccolo paese, non un grande negozio, e penso possa essere preso a riferimento per le nuove coppie della zona nord-est di Milano. An italian eye to the USA photo albums market

To be sincere today I am really tired, but I want the same to start to talk about and interesting argument. In the next day we will talk about differences between italian and USA photo albums. To start this talk I promised to begin from the site of Jeff Schaefer, a wedding photographer that I don't know and I will probably never meet - so this is not pubblicity. I guess him into Google as I told you yesterday.

In his own interesting site I just had a look to FAQ and to the suggested album page: See the albums page.

He declares to use essentially two kind of album:

This is not a good photo album interior

Why? Because a photo album is not a book and it must be done to show images, so when you open it you should see a plain effect. For instance I have seen, going random into Google, the following image of wedding album from www.jeffsphotography.com , the site of a professional photographer in Cincinnati (Ohio, USA).

Perché? Perché un album fotografico non è un libro ed è fabbricato per mostrare fotografie, quindi quando lo apri deve darti un effetto piano. Ho visto per esempio, andando a caso su Google, questa immagine tratta da www.jeffsphotography.com , il sito di un fotografo professionista di Cincinnati (Ohio, USA).

In the next post I am going to have a deeper look into his site, becouse I think it could be interesting to observe differences between the italian and the USA photo album market, but now I only want to tell you that if you want a good album you must first of all to avoid to buy one like in the first image. The "book effect" that will be reduced any way by the weight when to stick on picture to the album, it is not a good start, expecially if you want to buy this album to give it to the photographer. He will not like it and, believe me, because of the not flexible binding, it will be broken soon. That's why it is not a good idea to buy this kind of products to the supermarket, because all photo album there will be similar to picture 1. A good wedding album instead, without pictures too, shows itself like in picture 2.

Nel prossimo post ho intenzione di andare un po' più a fondo in questo sito, perché credo sia interessante mostrare alcune differenze tra il mercato americano dell'album fotografico e quello italiano, ma per ora voglio solo dirvi che se volete un buon album dovete innanzitutto evitare di acquistarne uno come in figura 1. Il cosiddetto "effetto libro", che certamente viene affievolito dal peso quando incollate le foto, non è un buon segno, soprattutto se volete comprarlo per darlo al fotografo. Non gli piacerà e, credetemi, a causa della rilegatura non flessibile, si romperà presto. Questo è il motivo per il quale non è una buona idea acquistare questo tipo di prodotti al supermercato, perché lì troverete album fotografici simili alla figura 1; un buon album da matrimonio invece, anche senza fotografie, deve avere un aspetto simile alla figura 2.

Who produces handmade wedding albums in Italy?

The answer is easy. A lot of people, because an handmade product can be made by anyone who have the know-how.

More in detail the answer should concern only firms who are able to make a good product, with a brand known in the italian market and abroad. If you want three names I would say:

If you want four names I would say Gemma www.albumgemma.it too because this firm produces a good commercial product, well distributed expecially in the northern of Italy and in Milan sorrounding.

If you want to marry with an italian handmade album or you are a photographer who don't know the italian market, I would suggest you to choose from one of the above mentioned trademark.

For the history it is right to remember one of the most important mark of album of the past, Linea Biemme, who has stopped his own production about one year ago.

Photo album made in cuoio? cuoietto? synthetic?

Today I want to talk about 'cuoio'. It is an Italian word with a specific meaning but a lot of people talk about 'cuoio' without to know what this meaning is. 'Cuoio' is not 'leather'. Leather is the skin of the animal, only the thin surface, cuoio refers only to the cow and to the complete leather of the animal: for this reason the tickness of cuoio is larger than the leather one. If you see "vero cuoio" written to an italian product this should only have the meaning of cuoio, but you can be sure that a lot of "made in italy" products are not made exactly in this way. Of course don't worry, your album could be an high quality one even if it is made using a plastic material, but it is important not to be fascinated by the "vero cuoio" stamp because many times it could be a lie.

Another talk is about "cuoietto", a compound material made by leather and plastics. From an esthetic point of view this kind of product could be even nicer than the made in cuoio one but pay attention to the price because modern technology is able to reproduce leather faithfully, so you should know that a made in cuoio album is sold in italy - to the married couple - not less than 300 euro. Of course you can spend even more for one album you like but don't believe to somebody who sell a "vero cuoio" wedding album (35X35 cm) for 250 euro or less. It is a lie.

A serious professional photographer in any case will help you to choose products from the catalouge of serious hand made album producer, he will not care about your choice because this is your taste, he will describe product and material for what they really are.

To finish it is also possible to buy by yourself the album for photos of your wedding ceremony but it is not polite so:

1) Be sure your photographer will accept the album you are going to buy. If he is a friend this should not be a problem.

2) Don't buy your album to the supermarket or to the megastore, because you will probably buy something which has not quality enough, even if it is chepest. Remember that your wedding album must be forever.
- In the picture above you can see an example of photo album made in synthetic leather with silver applications. You should be able to buy something similar for about 200 euro.

Oggi voglio parlarvi del cuoio. Si tratta di una parola italiana che ha un significato specifico ma ci sono un sacco di persone che parlano del cuoio senza sapere esattamente quale sia questo significato. Il cuoio non è la pelle. La pelle e solo la superficie della copertura dell’animale, il cuoio invece si riferisce solo al bovino ed alla copertura in tutto il suo spessore: per questa ragione la pelle è usualmente più sottile del cuoio. Se vedete la scritta “vero cuoio” su un prodotto fabbricato in Italia questo dovrebbe avere un significato preciso, ma potete essere certi che non tutti i prodotti “made in italy” che riportano questa dicitura sono fabbricati con un materiale che è letteralmente la pelle dell’animale. Naturalmente non preoccupatevi troppo, il vostro album potrà essere di ottima qualità anche se è fabbricato in plastica, solo è importante non restare affascinati dalla scritta “vero cuoio” perché tante volte può trattarsi di una bugia, tra l’altro molto difficile da dimostrare sul piano legale.
Un altro discorso riguarda il “cuoietto”, detto anche “cuoio rigenerato”, un materiale composto con pasta di pellame e un legante. Dal punto di vista estetico un album fatto in questo modo può essere persino più bello di uno fatto in cuoio ma fai attenzione al prezzo perché la moderna tecnologia è in grado di riprodurre fedelmente l’aspetto della pelle, quindi devi sapere che un album nozze in “cuoio primo fiore”, come si dice in gergo, cioè in cuoio autentico, in Italia non può costare agli sposi meno di 300 euro. Naturalmente potrai spendere persino di più per un album che ti piace, ma non credere a chi vuole venderti un album sposi in vero cuoio, dimensioni 35X35, per 250 euro o meno. E’ una bugia.
In ogni caso un fotografo professionista serio ti aiuterà a scegliere dal catalogo di una seria ditta di produttori di album artigianali, non farà molta attenzione alla tua scelta perché il gusto e tuo, e ti descriverà i prodotti ed i materiali per quello che sono.
Per finire è anche possibile comprare da te l’album sul quale far applicare le foto della cerimonia, ma in genere non è considerato gentile quindi:
1)Assicurati che il fotografo accetterà l’album che hai comprato. Se è un amico la cosa non dovrebbe essere un problema.
2) Non comprare l’album delle nozze al supermercato o al megastore perché probabilmente acquisterai qualcosa che non ha abbastanza qualità, anche se costa meno. Ricordati che l'abum delle nozze deve durare per sempre.

- Nella figura sopra puoi vedere un album in pelle sintetica con applicazioni in argento. Dovresti essere in grado di comprare qualcosa del genere dal tuo fotografo per circa 200 euro.
